While Im pretty lousy at electronics, I also was able to determine - to a working extent - that the pinout arrangement between the earlier boards and the 330360755760780T3400T7400T7500 are completely different - you cant just drill out the blind hole and connect the one connector to the other and hope it works. Due to the BTX form factor, not much actually swaps into them, and Im sure the XPS fellows here know what Im talking about. Ive also taken an interest in the general engineering of the Dimension and Optiplex boxes of this era, due to the engineering similarities and BTX form factor. Either that, or I just enjoy working with stuff that frustrates me. So, without further delay: Dell front panel IO boards Now, BTX isnt that hard to deal with, if you simply stick with BTX boards. Problem is, Dells front panel ribbon cables and front panel boards are proprietary. Whatever the case, lets examine the problems associated with mixing and matching Dell front panels: Different types of air temperature sensors: The air temperature sensor diode on nearly all Dell boxes of this era is either built directly into the front panel IO plate, or is on the motherboard connected to the front panel IO plate with a two-wire connector. Why Dell couldnt just hard-wire it into the motherboard and leave it at that is anyones guess. This means you will have to take the temperature sensor into account with your new board or front IO plate, namely, whether its on the motherboard or the front IO board. On the motherboard requires a cable to the IO plate, though your IO plate may not have the receiving plug (in which case, see the section below on the R434D diode from the newer Optiplex 960). Still, read on - there are even MORE caveats which result in other combinations that dont work. Whoopee Note: If youre here from Google because youre getting the Air Temperature Sensor Not Detected warning in your otherwise unmodified box, to the sound of fans louder than anything from a Mission Impossible film, dont bother reading on. Just replace the front panel andor the cable, and it should solve your problem. Front panel IO width differences: Thankfully, Dell stayed reasonably consistent with the same front panel design concept through the 2000s until the 9xx series: Mic jack Headphone Jack Diagnostic lights wpower button in the middle USB port USB port. Unfortunately, despite being notoriously similar, their widths differ (just in case you thought you could simply swap boards willy-nilly HAH). This is the first step in Dells engineers getting revenge against you: Photo: Dell front panel IO boards These boards are representative of the following (from top to bottom): Precision 690, T7400T7500 (and XPS 700710720, with exception to power button, see below) Dimension 5xxx series, Optiplex GX6xx series MT, and Optiplex 7xx series MT (MT mini-tower. Despite the mini name, the MT is the largest of the four models. Were not going to get into the DT or SFFs in this article, but the general idea for all of this is the same). Dell XPS 400410, Precision 390490 T3400 (all Precision models have a separate plug for the 1394 port, unlike the 690). All of these appear share a common pinout and ribbon cable, so in theory all of them should swap over. However, there are exceptions to the pinouts within the following models: Optiplex 330360755760780 Precision T3400T7400T7500 Optiplex 740745 Front panel IO pinout differences: Optiplex 330360755760780 and Precision T3400T7400T7500 pinout vs. Everything Else: The models above use the same Dell front panel connector design, but a completely different pinout. Unlike all the other boards which eliminate pin K21 (J1 on the Precision 690, but still pin 21), these eliminate pin K25. Dell Mih61R Motherboard Install The DirectionalAs the ribbon cables have these respective holes filled (just to make sure you destroy a pin or two if you are dense enough to actually install the directional and keyed ribbon cable upside down), youre forced into the intended front IO plate and cable.
